SMS with Twilio

Set up Twilio for SMS messaging, phone number provisioning, and credits.

Creating a Twilio Account

  1. Visit twilio.com and sign up for an account.
  2. Complete the identity verification process.
  3. Twilio provides a trial balance to get started. For production use, add a payment method and upgrade your account.

Purchasing a Phone Number

  1. In the Twilio Console, go to Phone Numbers > Buy a Number.
  2. Search for a number in your local area code. Ensure it has SMS capability enabled.
  3. Purchase the number. This will be your church's dedicated SMS line.

Connecting to SteepleOS

  1. In SteepleOS, navigate to Settings > SMS.
  2. Enter your Account SID and Auth Token from the Twilio Console dashboard.
  3. Enter the phone number you purchased (in E.164 format, e.g., +15551234567).
  4. Click Save & Test. SteepleOS will send a test message to verify the connection.

Managing SMS Credits

Twilio charges per message segment (approximately $0.0079 per SMS in the US). Monitor your usage in the Twilio Console under Usage > Records. Set up spending alerts to avoid unexpected charges. SteepleOS displays your approximate SMS balance on the Settings page for convenience.
